Starting a Blog – Editor’s Note 1

Welcome to my first ever so-called ‘Editor’s Note’. It’s the end of my first week after starting a blog once more. As a student of philosophy, I’m naturally inclined to think about thinking, write about writing, and blog about blogging. I’m creating my weekly Editor’s Note to update on how things are going, and to give myself the free space to speak about the meta and abstract.

The challenge of starting a blog (again)

In order to keep costs down, I’ve switched blog hosting companies. That’s good for my pocket, but means I had to start my blog all over again. I hope you like the design of the site, it’s bound to evolve as we go along. I’d recommend having a quick read here of my latest blog post, about how I built fluency in German. It’s my favourite one so far.

I’ve found it delightfully easy to come up with ideas for new blog posts. I’ve got a foolproof system for managing the “river of blog posts” I’ve got pouring out of my brain-box right now. This makes a change from years past, where I had a spurt of a few ideas and then soon ran dry again. This time, with planning, I’m future-proofing myself against myself. If it’s already in the plan, I’ve got to do it – titles, categories and launch dates are all planned out for the next 30-ish posts.

And, I’m proud to report, that this new-found organisation is reflective of how the rest of my life is going beyond starting a blog. I feel generally more “on it” and upbeat than I did 6 or 7 months ago. I feel like I’ve got a bit more pep in my step – things aren’t going perfectly, it’s fair to say, but they are going well.

What will the blog be about?

The blog posts I want to write in the future primarily concentrate on these topics, at least so far:

Things can of course chop and change, categories can get merged, removed or added. I’ve selected these to begin with as they are current and long-standing passions of mine. I’ve decided not to judge whether these types of blog posts will lead me to any kind of success, and I’m just appreciating enjoying writing. Naturally this is how things should have been from the beginning, but as a highly ambitious person, for me starting a blog meant shooting for the stars.

Now, I’m (even through my own eyes) markedly more chill about the whole operation – at least in terms of outcome. I don’t mind if nobody ever reads my writing – I have other, deeper motivations now. However, in many ways, my approach to starting a blog this time is decidedly more organised and focused. You could argue that this is actually a better formula for success – let’s just hope I can avoid crippling myself with perfectionism this time.
